As summer moves on, I wanted to provide an update regarding our current activities and projects.
During our meeting at the Annual Spring conference in Orlando, the Foundation Board approved three new awards that will recognize and reward young, talented and dedicated osteopathic orthopedic students, residents and surgeons. Award recipients will be recognized during the Annual Fall Meeting Awards Ceremony.
- Outstanding Student Scholarship (applications due August 19)
- Emerging Leader Award (applications due August 19)
- Outstanding Resident Paper Award
More information about these awards is available on our web page. We hope that by recognizing excellence in our profession we will foster growth, scholarship, and leadership within our Academy.
With regard to research, the Foundation has initiated a collaborative effort with the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF). It is our hope that we will be able to fund and distribute several significant research grants. The foundation is committed to excellence in scholarly activity. We want young researchers to be able to engage in publishable work. Watch for more information about this fundraising initiative and grants later this summer.
Lastly, the Foundation awarded its first research grant this year. Megan Sorich, DO was awarded $5,000 to assist with her fellowship research project, “Feasibility and Impact of Early Enteral Nutrition on Post-Operative Complications in Geriatric Hip Fracture Patients”. Dr. Sorich is a fellow at the University of Minnesota Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
The Foundation remains committed to supporting education, research, and now recognition. A fund-raising event is being planned during the AOAO Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs and we are counting on you, AOAO members, to help us continue our mission. Please look for updates on this event and consider attending and contributing.
