I am pleased to present the latest issue of The Orthopod!  I am especially excited about this issue and believe you’ll feel the same.

In addition to our regular updates, please check out “DO’s That DO”.  In this installment, Dr. Steven Heithoff interviews Dr. Charles Orth, an amateur astronomer and photographer.  Learn how this orthopedic surgeon from Missouri fostered an interest in the heavens and shares it with those around him.

Also, please review our scholarly articles from orthopedic residents.  Dr. Rebecca Chase details a technique of intramedullary plate fixation to facilitate reduction of challenging fractures.  Dr. Lisa Kaplin shares a case report of the operative treatment of a challenging proximal humerus fracture that revealed an anterior humeral circumflex artery injury.  In another case report, Dr. Kaplin discusses the development of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral condyles following the use of radiofrequency for an interior interval release.  All provide very interesting perspectives on cases that we may encounter daily.

Dr. Michael Groover, a Resident from the Grandview Program, was awarded the top winning poster over-all at the AAOS.  Entitled “The effect of metallic hardware on patient and surgical team scatter radiation utilizing mini C-arm in a simulated fracture fixation model”, Dr. Groover explores a surprising degree of radiation in which the surgical team is exposed during this common surgical case.  Check out his poster to learn what you can do to minimize your team’s risk.

I am also proud to introduce a new benefit provided by your Academy, the AOAO.  A new online CME tracker is now included as a benefit of membership.  The new online offering provides a secure means of recording your CME activity for easy reporting.  AOAO educational activities are automatically added.  We think that you will find the new service to be intuitive, easy and time saving in meeting CME reporting requirements.

Thank you all very much for your continued interest and support in your Academy’s publication.  I truly hope that you will enjoy this issue.
