Navigating a Fluid Landscape: Medical Students and COVID-19
By Adam LaFleur

As the uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 pandemic continues to progress, many medical students have received guidance and recommendations that change seemingly on a moment-by-moment basis.  At this year’s spring conference, the Academy Board of Directors and National Program Director panel unanimously recommended that students complete as many away/audition rotations as possible, so long as their home institution and target residency programs were agreeable to it.  This allowed students across the country to breathe a heavy sigh of relief and maximize their chances of successfully matching into orthopedics for the current residency application cycle.

SAOAO Updates
The National Executive Board of the Student American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics is proud to announce a renewed membership with Pocket Pimped, purchasing several hundred copies of an all new, signature SAOAO Edition handbook.  This new edition will include information about historically osteopathic residency programs, granting students the added benefit of learning about residencies that have traditionally matched osteopathic medical students.

SAOAO is also excited to share that the creation of an online virtual resource library for students is well underway.  The webinar series with the Resident American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (RAOAO) has been a resounding success, with hundreds of students from around the country having attended one or more of the webinar series.  The webinar series has been recorded for use in our virtual library and will serve as a cornerstone of educational content for years to come.

The National Executive Board is also thrilled to inform its members that it has begun the initial planning process for its first in-person conference in two years.  The dates are tentatively being set for October 29-30 at The Omni Louisville Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.  The event will feature lectures and hands-on workshop experiences from current surgeons and resident physicians, as well as demonstrations from surgical technology exhibitors.

We have had a very exciting year and look forward to continuing progress over the next few months.  Please do not hesitate to contact us at studentaoao@gmail.com.  We look forward to seeing everyone in Louisville!
