Scholarship and Grant Opportunities for Fellows, Residents and Students

The AOAO and the AOAO Foundation offer several opportunities for fellows, residents and students to receive recognition and or financial support for their research.

AOAO Awards

 AOAO Osteopathic Distinct Award

The Residents and Fellows Committee selects a recipient from abstracts submitted for the Annual Fall Meeting based on the criteria below. The recipient is invited to present during the Digital Poster Presentation session at the meeting. If the recipient can present during this session, he or she receives a monetary award and travel reimbursement.

Selection Criteria

  1. Relevance to the principles of osteopathy
  2. Relevance to patient treatment and potential to change clinical practice
  3. Originality of the work done

Outstanding Resident of the Year in Orthopedic Surgery
Sponsored by the AOAO and American Osteopathic Foundation

The Outstanding Resident of the Year in Orthopedic Surgery embodies the combination of clinical promise, leadership, dedication and commitment to osteopathic patient-centered care. Program Directors may nominate residents in their second year of training through their last year or residency or fellowship. Nominations are being accepted now through May 15, 2020. Click here for more information.

Scientific Paper Awards

Residents who are still required by their programs to submit case presentations or scientific papers during training may be eligible to receive a scientific paper award. Papers are submitted through the AOAO case log system and are then reviewed and scored by the AOAO Editorial Subcommittee each year. First, second and third place winners are selected in each category from papers receiving the highest scores. The resident must have been the lead author of their case presentation or scientific paper to qualify. Each winner receives a monetary award as well as travel reimbursement to present their paper at the AOAO annual meetings.

AOAO Foundation Grants and Awards

Osteopathic Research and Education for Orthopedics (ORE-O) Grant

The ORE-O Grant was established in 2019 through a collaboration between the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) and the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics Foundation (AOAO-F) to provide financial support for osteopathic orthopedic endeavors in research and education for the advancement of the profession and to provide opportunities for publishing such research.

A monetary award of $10,000 will be awarded to one (1) Osteopathic Orthopedic Resident or Fellow in training; distributed in a single payment. This award may be given more than once annually.

For more information and to apply, click here. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2020.

 Two Abstract Research Travel Scholarships

The AOAO Foundation Board reviews the top scored abstracts submitted to the Annual Fall Meeting and selects two recipients to receive the research travel scholarship. Both recipients must be 2nd, 3rd or 4th-year residents. Each selected recipient receives a $2,000 scholarship to offset the cost of travel to the Annual Fall Meeting for which the abstract was submitted.

Outstanding Resident Paper Award

The Outstanding Resident Paper Award recipient is selected from the abstracts submitted for the AOAO Annual Fall Meeting. The resident receiving the overall highest score will be selected based on the scoring of the AOAO Residents and Fellows Committee. The recipient will receive a plaque, recognition at the Annual Fall Meeting and a monetary award.

Outstanding Student Scholarship

The Outstanding Student Scholarship recipient will be selected by the AOAO Foundation Board based on AOAO membership, activities in their college of osteopathic medicine, volunteer services, leadership roles, and research projects.

The recipient must be present to receive the award. Included with the award will be $250, complimentary registration, a ticket to the Foundation Dinner and a plaque.

Applications accepted here until May 30, 2020.
